Anthony Veder
Terneuzen, 25 October 2024 - Anthony Veder, a well-known Rotterdam-based shipping company in gas transportation, is committed to safety and innovation. Anthony Veder is constantly looking for ways to improve the safety and efficiency of their operation, including through digital transformation. For instance, modern, portable ATEX equipment helps the shipping company, as these devices not only meet the functional requirements of process improvement, but also strict safety standards regarding fire and explosion safety. As a result, existing work processes can also be carried out in so-called gas zones on ships.
‘Jenson Atex Depot is one of the largest suppliers of ATEX equipment in the Netherlands with a lot of experience in industrial environments. In particular, the thorough advice and opportunities to test various devices live were decisive in the choice of supplier.’ - Jesse Westerman, Digital Development Engineer at Anthony Veder.
Orientation
Jesse Westerman, working in the Digital Development department at the time, outlined the needs of seafarers and found that a new range of ATEX phones offered the best all-round potential for process improvement. The devices chosen obviously had to be able to withstand industrial environments, but also offer capabilities for good audio and video connections, a sufficiently large screen for digital checklists, for example, and provide a robust platform for future applications.
Visit to ATEX Experience Centre:
To get a good insight into the capabilities of ATEX-certified devices, Anthony Veder visited the ATEX Experience Center. Here, they got hands-on demonstrations of several certified smartphones, and learned how these devices could help them in their operations.
Testing of ATEX equipment on board ships
After the orientation, the I.Safe mobile 540.1 was tested on board several Anthony Veder ships. This included testing an MDM (Mobile Device Management) solution to ensure that the additional layer of software runs properly on the chosen phone. The testing phase was essential to ensure that the devices function properly in maritime environments, especially the sometimes limited bandwidth available.
Purchase and Implementation
After successful testing, Anthony Veder decided to purchase the IS540.1 for their entire fleet. The accessories offered by I.Safe, such as separate desk chargers, as well as handheld scanners that work seamlessly with existing phones, made I.Safe the most attractive option.
Impact
This initiative has so far resulted in several key benefits for Anthony Veder:
- Managed Devices: The phones are centrally managed, meaning the phones are all equipped with a set of standard applications, and the phones are protected against misuse.
- Operational Efficiency: Remote use of applications for administration such as maintenance and logs is enabled by the phones, including in so-called gas zones on the ship.
- Enhanced Communication: These modern smartphones are equipped with good cameras, allowing capture of video or photos even in gas zones.
In this use case, Anthony Veder used the I.Safe Mobile 540.1, the first 5G smartphone specifically designed for ATEX Zone 1. With its powerful processor, the IS540.1 offers fast data processing, ideal for demanding applications such as predictive maintenance and real-time monitoring. The smartphone also features a powerful 48 MP main camera, delivering the highest image quality for capturing important details and performing accurate inspections.
