ATEX Directive: Explosion Safety in Practice

Explosion Safety in Practice

In industrial environments where explosion risks are a real concern, safety isn’t optional—it’s essential. The ATEX directive provides a clear framework for managing risks and creating safe workplaces. But in practice, compliance requires more than just purchasing certified equipment. It demands insightstructure, and above all, practical application.

The directive consists of two parts. ATEX 114 (2014/34/EU) focuses on equipment and protective systems used in potentially explosive atmospheres. ATEX 153 (1999/92/EC) outlines the minimum safety requirements for workplaces where such atmospheres may occur. Together, they form the foundation for safe operations in zones 1/21 and 2/22.

However, regulation alone isn’t enough. A well-structured designation policy is crucial to ensure explosion safety is truly embedded in daily operations. In the Netherlands, the NEN 3140 standard is often used, but ATEX environments require additional expertise. The internationally recognized IECEx 05 certification provides a solid framework for assessing the competencies of personnel working in hazardous zones.

This certification defines four key roles:

  • EXA – Explosion hazard awareness
  • EXI – Inspection and evaluation of installations
  • EXM – Maintenance and assembly
  • EXT – Supervision and coordination

Clearly defining these roles brings structure to the organization. Employees understand their responsibilities, which reduces miscommunication and enhances safety on the work floor.

For companies in sectors such as oil and gaschemical processingfood production, or waste management, the ATEX directive is far from theoretical. It’s a practical tool that helps analyze risks, apply the right equipment safely, and ensure personnel are certified at the appropriate level.

As a specialist in explosion-proof IT and industrial equipment, we support organizations not only with products but also with knowledge and guidance. We assist in setting up an effective designation policy, advise on role distribution, and help translate regulations into workable solutions.
